Herbicide Application

The most effective method of lawn weed control is through herbicide application.  Herbicides are chemicals that kill weeds, or alter the way they grow so that they cannot spread.  Herbicides are selected for turf weed control that control only targeted species while leaving desirable turfgrasses healthy.  There are two categories of herbicidal weed control: pre-emergent and post-emergent.

Pre-Emergent & Post-Emergent Lawn Weed Control

Pre-emergent lawn weed control utilizes herbicides that are applied to the lawn prior to the emergence of targeted weeds.  Most often, this strategy is used for annuals, grasses and grass-like species.  Pre-emergent herbicide is applied to the soil in liquid or granular form.  Uniform application is critical to effective lawn weed control.  Herbicides must be watered in within two days of application.  SprayTech experts will properly apply pre-emergent weed control and ensure all herbicides have been properly absorbed into the soil.  The best time to apply pre-emergent weed control is 10 to 14 days prior to expected germination.  This occurs in the spring and various each year depending on climate, location and other factors.  Reapplication may be needed for weed control all season long.  If chemical applications are poorly dispersed, late post-emergent weed control will be needed.

Post-emergent lawn weed control occurs after weeds have emerged from the soil.  Herbicides are generally applied to the foliage of the weeds.  It is important to time foliar applications properly to ensure they are absorbed by the targeted weed; water can wash the herbicide off of the weed, making the treatment ineffective. For perennial grasses that are unwanted in your lawn, herbicide control spread across your entire lawn is not effective.  The types of herbicides required to treat perennial grasses can also kill the species that you want to maintain.  SprayTech provides spot weed killing services for these species.  Lesco, is the most reliable herbicide for this type of treatment. Lesco is most effective when applied to the plant during active growth periods.  Some other grass species require species-specific herbicide application for control.  In order to understand which herbicide to use, you must be sure of your plant identification.  Treating for the wrong species will waste time and money.
