Why Should You Consider Deep Root Watering Trees?

Drought in Colorado is common; without irrigation, most of our trees would not exist in urban areas.  Trees that are not given enough water deep root watering treeswill eventually develop drought related stress.  It is not always easy to see symptoms of drought stress in trees as it can take up to two years to show up in your trees.  Eventually you will notice wilting, curling and yellowing leaves on hardwoods.  Deciduous trees can also have a scorched appearance.  They can be brown along the edges of leaves or in between leaf veins.  In evergreens, needle drop can occur in severe cases.  Prior to needle drop, they can turn yellow, purple or reddish.  Needle discoloration can occur at the tip and slowly progress down towards the stem.  Over time, drought conditions can retard leaf development and cause early or late leaf drop.

Drought stress does not always kill trees.  However, it reduces the trees natural defense system.  This leaves them susceptible to more serious tree diseases and insect infestations.  SprayTech can help keep these damaging insects and diseases at bay, through deep root watering your trees and preventative spray applications.

What is Deep Root Watering?

Deep root watering is when the soil is saturated twelve inches below the surface of the soil.  Saturating the soil next to the tree base is not enough.  Water must be provided to the width of the tree’s dripline, or outer edge of its branches, in order to reach all of the roots.  Conifers have a slightly wider root system.  Deep watering trees requires slow water dispersal.  Leave low flowing water on for longer periods of time to ensure proper saturation.  Short watering periods can cause further drought stress by encouraging shallow root growth.

Digging holes in the ground to increase water depth is a wasted effort.  In fact, it dries out soil and roots even faster by leaving more exposed surface area from which water can evaporate.  If you have soft soil, you can use a soil needle to inject water into the ground.  It is also important to avoid spraying water over the entire tree or shrub.  This is ineffective, especially during drought.  Most drops of water will be evaporated before they are allowed to penetrate the soil.  Water at ground level is the most efficient watering strategy.
